Two weeks ago, Matooke Republic, Uganda’s only free newspaper broke the story a new wave of crime, Terror at the gate, which involves assailants robbing people by smashing their car windows with stones as they wait at the gate.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga says Police is stepping up operations in affected areas like Naalya, Kiwatule, Najjera and Namugongo to curb the crime.
“We are going to constantly patrol the affected areas during the night hours,” Enanga told a press briefing at the Police headquarters in Naguru. “There will be heavy deployment of police personnel in all corners of the community to ensure that tight security is observed and to track all wrong elements in these areas,” he said.
Enanga added that Police will also use of bait cars hoping that the goons will fall into their traps.
The Police spokesman added that they are also going to mount operations in downtown arcades where most of the stolen items like phones and laptops end up.
“If you are a dealer in second hand electronics, you must have details of the person who sold it to you, include their receipt,” Enanga advised.
Enanga has advised the public to improve lighting and install CCTV cameras at their gates to avert crime and help Police with investigations in case of occurrence of the crimes.
