Don’t go begging foreigners to help you complete your houses or pay children’s fees – Museveni warns ministers

museveniPresident Museveni has made a firm stance on his commitment to fight corruption, a cancer that is crippling Uganda’s economy.

During the State of The Nation Address at the Kampala Serena Hotel this Tuesday afternoon, Museveni warned ministers and other government officials to stop begging foreigners and investors for favours like completing their houses and school fees for their children.

“That is disgusting corruption,” Museveni said.

“If you want help, you go to your party,” Museveni said drawing laughter from Ministers and Members of Parliament.

He reiterated his recent swearing message of his commitment to fight corruption, citing the recent Commission of Inquiry report on corruption in the Uganda National Roads Authority, where it was revealed that money used to construct 1,000km of Uganda’s road network, could have been used to construct 5,000km, leading to the country losing Shs14 trillion to corruption.

“They say that contracts were awarded to the lowest bidder, but if the lowest bidder is overcharging you, why go for them? I am a soldier and I know the cost of a gun because I have dealt with them for a long time. You can’t overcharge for a gun because I know the prices. Likewise, these roads people should know the cost of a road in our conditions,” he said.

“In this term, the corrupt are going to see what a muyekera (rebel) looks like,” he warned.
