High Court has this Wednesday morning directed telecom companies MTN Uganda and Airtel to produce information on phone conversations of Christopher Aine, the missing head of presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi’s security detail.
Aine went missing in mid-December last year and was rumoured dead after the Red Pepper published a photo of a dead body they reported belonged to Aine. Relatives also said they believed the body belonged to Aine because of marks on the face that were similar to ones Aine sustained from a previous accident.
Police put a Shs20m bounty for anyone who produced Aine to answer charges of assault on NRM supporters in Ntungamo, but relatives insist he was picked by security officers and taken to an unknown destination.
High Court Judge Lydia Mugambe said the call records would help in ascertaining the whereabouts of Aine.
Mbabazi’s lawyers are pushing for Uganda Police to produce the body of the missing person in court, but that has so far not been possible because Police say they are also looking for him.
Matooke Republic understands that the lawyers are interested in a phone conversation between Aine and one of his relatives Ezra Kabugo on the night of his disappearance.
Kabugo, says that Police contacted him searching for Aine and he placed a phone call to Aine to tell him about the happenings. He adds that Aine contacted him on phone moments before his arrest and told him that his house had been surrounded.
Kabugo further stated in his affidavit that a few minutes later, Aine’s contacts were off which pointed to the possibility that police had arrested him.
Mbabazi’s lawyers say that the only way to verify Kabugo’s assertions is by retrieving the phone conversations.
