The family of businesswoman Donah Betty Katushabe who was killed at a car bond last year has declared their discontent towards the proceedings regarding the case. Through their lawyers, Tumwebaze, Atugonza, Kobusingye Advocates, they have petitioned the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mike Chabita seeking the production of the accused former Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) Aaron Baguma in court over charges.

“While following the case, we were informed that despite several orders being issued to have Aaron Baguma produced in court for trial, police has failed to comply,” reads part of the letter dated  18th July.

Mr. Baguma is accused of doing nothing when he found Ms. Katushabe being beaten and tortured by car bondsmen over a Sh9m debt. It is alleged that her cries to him for help fell on deaf ears and she later died due to the brutality. The crime took place a few meters away from CPS.

The DPP spokesperson, Ms. Jane Kajura Okuo, confirmed yesterday that police was instructed to charge Mr. Baguma with murder but up to date the suspect hasn’t been produced in court, despite being seen carrying out his duties freely and undeterred. Mr. Baguma is jointly charged with Mr. Muhammad Ssebuwuffu the proprietor of City Car Bond where the crime occurred.

Mr. Chabita attributed the delay in prosecution to new clues implicating five other policemen to have been present when the crime was taking place and that this new information was from witnesses who had feared to come forward in the first place. Mr. Baguma and his co-accused Mr. Ssebuwuffu will both be tried at Buganda Road Chief magistrate’s court.
