Police boss Gen. Kale Kayihura has finally bowed to pressure from the public, media and human rights activists and has transferred and suspended senior cops that commanded forces that beat up supporters of opposition leader- Dr Kizza Besigye recently.
Among those shuffled is the commander of Kampala Metropolitan Police- Mr Abbas Byakagaba, and his deputy Stephen Tanui, who have been transferred to the Senior Command and Staff College as Commandant and deputy commandant respectively.
Gen. Kayihura has replaced Mr Byakagaba with Mr Frank Mwesigwa, who has been the commandant of Police Training School-Kabalye Masindi. Mr Mwesigwa will be deputised by Mr Ezekiel Emitu, who has been his deputy in kablalye.
Gen. Kayihura has suspended other senior officers that were involved in the same mess. Those dropped include; Mr Andrew Kaggwa, who has been the commander for Kampala Metropolitan Police South, Mr Samuel Bamuzibire, the KMP Field Force Unit commander; Mr Moses Nanoka, the Wandegeya Division police commander; Mr Patrick Muhumuza, the KMP South operations commander, and Mr Aaron Baguma, the Kampala Central Police Station commander.
Mr Aaron Baguma has been replaced by Mr Joseph Bakaleke. Deputy Police spokesperson, Ms Polly Namaye, confirmed the transfers that they are normal police deployments.
Gen. Kayihura had come out and applauded the officers for ‘a job well done’ when the incident had just happened, but going by the police boss’ actions earlier today, he might want to retract his earlier statements!
