Another security officer shot in Gulu attack passes away

masabaAnother security officer has succumbed to injuries sustained during Sunday night’s gunfire at Gulu Central Police station.

Moses Masaba, the regional Fire Officer was admitted to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor in critical condition following the shootout.  He was pronounced dead at 9.30pm on Monday night.




Police confirmed his passing. “He has gone to rest from all this pain,” said deputy police spokesperson Polly Namaye.

“I mourn him too, I knew him personally and he was such a promising young man,” she added.

Masaba is the second security officer who has died, following the attack. On Monday, Police chief Kale Kayihura confirmed that a UPDF soldier, Cpl Moses Odema had died on spot during the sporadic gunfire.

About a dozen assailants attacked the police station on Sunday night to rescue an inmate who was set to appear before court the following day. After a shoot-out with security, they were repulsed and made off, leaving behind six AK 47 rifles and a pick-up truck.

The assailants have been linked to a previous attack on an LDU detach in Opit, still in Gulu, where they stole the guns.

Other injured security officers who are now hospitalised include Ms Sunday Atimango, who was shot in the abdomen, Maj Jasper Komakech, Sgt Vincent Kibuye and Pte Michael Opoka Kilama .

The UPDF spokesman, Lt Col Paddy Ankunda, confirmed last evening that five suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.
