amama4Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi is set to be nominated as a presidential candidate this morning. However, there have been rumours of a pending arrest.

One of Mbabazi’s lawyers, Fred Muwema yesterday said Mbabazi faced arrest. “We have got intelligence information which we have verified as being true that our candidate is to bearrested between now and the nomination day,” he said.

Muwema said Mbabazi would “answer to three charges of murder, money laundering and spying for a foreign country.”

As he prepared for his nomination this morning, Amama said arresting him, “would be unfortunate for our democracy.”

Asked whether he is threatened by an impending arrest, Mbabazi said, “I wouldn’t be threatened by the allegations.”

Mbabazi was expected to be nominated at 11am and he left his Kololo residence at about 9.40am after Police that was required to escort him to Namboole arrived.

“Our message is a message of a new Uganda. Museveni has done a lot of things but we have reached a date when we must go to higher levels and I am happy to participate,” he said.
