You might have to turn to the bootleggers at Majestic Plaza in downtown Kampala for a copy of 50 Shades of Grey as the movie has been banned from showing in the cinemas.

The movie, based on a 2011 erotic romance novel of the same title was supposed to be the main attraction for cinema goers this Valentine’s. But because of numerous sex and nudity scenes, the Uganda Communications Commission has stopped cinemas from screening it.

A Statement from 3D Cinema Magic Reads:

“UNFORTUNATELY DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES BEYOND OUR CONTROL, THE MOVIE: FIFTY SHADES OF GREY HAS BEEN CANCELLED BY THE UGANDA COMMUNICATIONS COUNCIL.
~(U.C.C)~

PLEASE COLLECT YOUR REFUND IF YOU HAD ALREADY PURCHASED ADVANCED TICKETS.

WE REGRET ALL INCONVENIENCES CAUSED.”

50 Shades of Grey’s banning follows the banning of another Hollywood blockbuster TheWolf Of Wall Street. The movie violates the Anti Pornography Law and thus cannot be screened publicly in Uganda.

It is rated R, for strong sexual content, including dialogue, some unusual behaviour and graphic nudity. The storyline revolves around Anastacia Grey, a literature student who fills in for her roommate to interview billionaire Christian Grey, an eligible bachelor. She encounters a beautiful, brilliant, but intimidating man. Not able to resist Ana’s beauty and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her too, but on his own terms.

However, even if you go to the bootleggers to purchase a copy, you still commit a crime as anyone found selling or in possession of the movie contravenes the Anti Pornography Law.
