Hundreds of graduates line up for jobs at Javas restaurant

Hundreds of graduates this morning thronged Cafe Javas, a full-service, quick-casual, coffee-themed restaurant chain in Kampala for jobs.

The restaurant earlier advertised opportunities for kitchen staff, barista, waiters and waitresses.

The uncomfortable sight of smartly dressed young men and women hoping for a chance of employment is glaring reality of the disturbing rate of unemployment in the country.

According to a 2012 State of Uganda Population Report, youth in Uganda are the youngest population in the world, with 77% of its population being under 30 years of age and unemployed. There are 7,310,386 youth from the ages of 15–24 years of age living in Uganda.
